ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Pete Carlon named Christian Wassmer the universities new men's and women's tennis coach. Wassmer has served as the Mavericks associate head coach for the past five years.
"I am very excited to continue the great tradition of the UTA tennis teams," Wassmer said.
Under Wassmer's direction the Lady Maverick squad has won four-of-five Southland Conference titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times. Wassmer was honored as the SLC Coach of the Year twice, while more than 25 of his athletes were all-conference selections. Wassmer coached two-time SLC Player of the Year Lisa Jackson, the 2002 Player of the Year Marketa Cizova and the 2003 Player of the Year Annemarie Lenze. In Wassmer's five years, the Lady Mavericks compiled a 46-match winning streak that came to an end in 2003 when UTA was forced to play each match shorthanded due to injury.
The Lady Mavericks open the fall season at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. on September 12, while the men's squad will open at the Lamar Invitational in Beaumont on September 19.
