ARLINGTON, Texas - Much like the women's squad, UTA men's tennis will be relying on a wealth of new talent to the roster. Just three returners join an influx of newcomers with talent that includes a transfer that won at the highest level of junior college.
Juniors Guanarteme Nuez and Mauricio Del Rio lead in experience out of the three returnees, whith Nuez leading in doubles wins at 16 and Del Rios in singles at 19. Both had a strong 2016-17 campaign, are are looking to continue to improve.
Joining the duo, the highlight of the incoming class is Tyler Junior College transfer Enrique Pardo. The Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain native helped Tyler JC to a runner-up finish in the JCAA Division I Tennis Tournament. Pardo was named a ITA Tennis NJCAA All-American and an ITA Collegiate All-Star team selection. Pardo claimed Flight 3 of the National Tournament and concluded the year ranked No. 1 in doubles.
"We are very excited about the fall and the tournaments ahead," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "We have a lot of great new talents and a lot of new players that are really playing a high quality of tennis and have climatized to the new environment and new way of living in the US and everything it takes coming to America and go to a college in a new country. I am very happy of the progress.
"The work the returnees have done is remarkable in how they have shown them everything. I am very proud of them and the leadership that they had towards the new players. The fall is going to be really good. It is a good schedule and I think that we can really achieve great success."
The men open up the 2017 fall campaign in Midland at the 2017 Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational, a staple on the Maverick schedule each season. UTA will visit Tulsa, Okla. On Sept. 30 in the 2017 Saint Francis Health System's ITA Men's All-American Championship. The season culminates at the ITA Texas Regional, hosted by Texas A&M beginning on Oct. 20.
