WACO, Texas - The UT Arlington men's tennis team traveled to the HEB Baylor Invitational over the weekend and brought back a consolation bracket championship by junior Austin Robles.
Robles, from Naples, Fla., completed the tournament with a 3-1 record and defeated fellow Maverick Javier Perez 1-6, 6-2, 11-9 to claim the Green Draw consolation title.
"It was a good tournament for us," UTA tennis coach Diego Benetiz said. "We played a lot of tough matches at a level that got better throughout the rounds."
Robles reached the consolation final after falling in his opening match. In the consolation bracket, Robles defeated Gavin Grivel of Idaho and Odon Barta of Idaho.
Daniel Armengol also found success in the Gold Draw of the tournament, posting a 2-2 record with wins against Hunter Johnson (Louisiana-Lafayette) and Blake Bazarnki of Illinois. Armengol would fall to the eventual Gold consolation champion in the semi-finals.
In doubles, the Mavs had a trio of doubles teams conclude play with a 1-1 record. Robles and Perez teamed up to defeated a team from Laredo 8-7(4) before falling to a pair from Lafayette.
Carlos Arbiza and Marek Pesicka defeated Lafayette 8-4 before falling to UTSA 8-6. Francesco Migliano and Stefan Williams defeated a mixed team from UTSA and Illinois 8-6, and fell to the host, Baylor, 8-2.
The men's tennis team returns to competition at the Columbia Invitational in New York, N.Y. on Oct. 4-6.
