ARLINGTON, Texas - It was is the most competitive tournament of the fall season, the UTA men's squad will take part in the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships, beginning on Saturday with the pre-qualifying draw.
The Mavericks will feature a four-team squad that consists of juniors Mauricio Del Rio and Guanarteme Nuez to go with freshmen Eduard Simo and Andre Russo. Held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, the tournament consists of a pre-qualifying draw, a qualifying draw and main draw that runs between Sept. 30 and Oct. 9.
In addition to vying for the All-American national title, players will be competing to secure a berth into the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which takes place November 1-5, in Palm Desert, California. Singles quarterfinalists, consolation singles champion and finalist, along with doubles semifinalists and consolation doubles champion and finalist advance to the end of fall national championship.
The tournament is the second of the season for the men's squad, having taken part in the Racquet Club Invitational earlier in September. Nuez led the pack with a 3-1 record to bump his overall career record to 19-14. In doubles, he partnered with del Rio to advance into the the second round before falling in a close contest. Both Russo and Simo went 1-1 in Midland to open the season and will be competing in just their second tournament in UTA colors.
