Arlington, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington men's tennis team competed in the 2008-09 Columbia Classic hosted by Columbia University this past weekend at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center in New York.

Four members of the Mavericks squad traveled to New York City to compete against teams from Binghamton, FDU, Columbia, Harvard, Penn, Monmouth, Marist, Princeton, Sacred Heart and St. John's.

In the `A' Singles Main Draw Round of 16, Brieuc Hamon captured a 7-6 (9), 1-0 victory over Sasha Svetlakou of St. John's but dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Erin Sezgen of Columbia in the quarter finals.

Newcomer Mindaugas Celedinas suffered a 6-4, 6-1 setback to Jon Jaklitsch of Cornell and dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision against Josh Goldstein of Cornell in the `A' Singles Consolation bracket.

Adam Srkala represented the `B' Singles Main Draw where he defeated Princeton's Parker Preyer by a final score of 6-1, 6-4 but dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision against Martin Kosut of St. John's.

Dmitry Minkin recorded a victory over Marko Jemersic of FDU by a final score of 6-1, 6-3 but dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision to Penn's Phil Law.

In doubles' action, duo Celedinas and Minkin advanced to the semifinals where they were one victory away from capturing the championship.

The tandem collected an 8-6 victory in the round of 16 against Yohei Shoji and Preyer of Princeton. The double's partners continued to breeze by their opponents recording an 8-6 win over Matt Gordon and Dominic Herny of FDU but dropped an 8-1 decision against Columbia's Mihai Nichifor and Haig Schneiderman in the semifinals.

Hamon and Srkala defeated Harvard's Cam Parker and Will Guzick by a final score of 9-8 (1) but suffered an 8-3 setback over Sasha Svetlakou and Martin Kosut of St. John's in the quarterfinals.

 

 

The Mavericks will rest for a week and prepare for the Regional Tournament hosted by Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas on Friday, Oct. 24.
