WACO, Texas - - UT Arlington pole vaulter Cory Carswell cleared 16 feet, 6 3/4 inches to win the event Saturday at the Michael Johnson Classic and post a regional qualifying height. Carswell's vault matches the best this year by teammate Wade Hayes, giving UTA two athletes who have posted regional qualifying heights in the pole vault.
Carswell joins Eddie Beckwith and Jasmine Walls on the list of UTA track and field athletes who stood out at at the meet in Waco.
Beckwith ran a 47.04 for fifth place in the 400 meters, beating the regional time needed of 47.20. Beckwith's best this season, however, is a 46.91 ran March 29 at the Bobby Lane Invitational in Arlington
Jasmine Walls, the sophomore sprinter from Pearland, also posted a regional qualifying time, hitting 11.67 in the finals of the 100 meters. Walls personal-best this outdoor season was a qualifying time of 11.71. UTA had several other top performers, including Christina Mose, who ran a first-place time of 4:55.29 in the 1,500 meters.
Annabelle Everitt won the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and Tim Thompson had an impressive showing in the 110-meter hurdles with a third-place time of 14.56.
Andrew Duncan won the high jump by clearing 6 feet, 8.75 inches, and Quinchun Carey won the long jump with a leap of 23-7 1/2. Teammate Patrick Kimberly wasn't far behind, going 23-6 3/4.
