MAVS STANDS IN SECOND AT SLC CHAMPIONSHIP

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - UT Arlington had three runners place in the top eight of the men's 10,000-meter run and stand in second place in the team standings after the opening day of the 2007 Southland Conference Track and Field Championship at the Homer Bryce Stadium here Friday.
Day two of the meet includes the final events in the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon at 9 a.m. The finals in the high jump, long jump, javelin and shot put will get underway at 1 p.m. and running prelims begin at 5 p.m. The finals in the 3,000-meter steeplechase is slated to begin at 8:30 p.m.
Freshman Armando Saldivar finished fourth in the men's 10K with a time of 31:59.65. Senior Koby Styles, the school-record holder in the 10K with 30:16.69 set at the North Texas Invitational on April 14, suffered a hard fall midway through the race, but rallied to finish fifth with a 32:08.22. Junior Jody Broccoli-Hickey finished seventh with a 32:30.03.
The 11 points in the event lifted the Mavericks into second place in the team standings to conclude the first day. Host Stephen F. Austin leads the meet with 15 points., Southeastern Louisiana and Texas State are tied for third with 10 points. McNeese State, Sam Houston State and Lamar are tied for fifth with eight points.
"We thought we might do a little better in the 10K," said UT Arlington Head Track and Field Coach John Sauerhage. "Armando did a nice job being a freshman and finishing fourth with such a strong field. Koby came back very well after the fall. Jody (Broccoli-Hickey) made a nice comeback to grab seventh, We are on (the scoreboard) and on our way. Hopefully we won't have anyone else fall this weekend."
