HOUSTON - Texas-Arlington transfer Devario Johnson captured 'B" division of the long jump competition with a lap of 22-feet, five-inches at the Houston Indoor Invitational at the Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse here Saturday.

The UTA men finished 10th in a field of 21 teams with 24 points. Host Houston won the competition with 69.5 points.

Johnson's individual accomplishment stood out along with a solid effort from the Mavericks' distance runners. Junior Jacob Cedertun took fourth place in Section 4 of the mile run with a time of 4:17.98. Senior Erik Petersson was third in the 3,000-meter run with an 8:31.25. Senior Stefan Johansson clocked the best time by a Maverick this winter with a 1:56.27 for sixth place in the 800 meters.

In the pole vault, Shay Collett was third with a season-best vault of 15-07.

In the sprints, junior Glen Taylor was second in Heat 3 of the 60 meter dash with a 6.97. In the 200 meters, freshman Jared Connaughton was second in the Section 5 with a 22.68.

Adam Stafford was third n the 60-meter hurdles final with the fourth-best time in the Southland Conference this indoor season - an 8.13. Paul Whitty clocked an 8.25 and Coby Morrison an 8.38 in the prelims.

Brian Allison's 51.02 was third in his heat in the 400 meter event. The 1,600-meter relay team took fifth in Section 2 with a 3:26.18.

UTA concludes the 2004 indoor season Feb. 20-21 at the SLC Indoor Championships at the Yeoman Fieldhouse. -
