ARLINGTON, Texas -- For the third consecutive week, a UT Arlington men's track and field athlete has been named the Southland Conference Athlete of the Week. This time, junior pole vaulter Jeff Rodriguez earned the distinction.
Rodriguez, a Fort Worth native (Fossil Ridge H.S.), set a school record by clearing 5.32 meters (17-feet 5 ½ inches) at the Varsity Apartments Invitational in Wichita, Kan., on Saturday. He won the event by more than a foot, and grabbed the top mark in the conference this season in the process.
Rodriguez, a second-team All-American who advanced to the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships, has won three of the four events in which he has competed this spring.
The Mavericks are off this weekend and will return to action Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Oklahoma Sooner Open. The Southland Conference Indoor Championships will take place Feb. 24-25 in Norman, Okla.
