T&F: Mavericks open outdoor season at TCU Invitational

FORT WORTH, Texas - The UT Arlington men's and women's track and field teams opened the outdoor season with some strong performances Saturday at the TCU Invitational, most notably in the field events.

The UTA men won three individual events, all coming in the field. Jeff Rodriguez carried over his success from the indoor season by winning the pole vault, clearing 5.21 meters.

In the jumps, Isiah Clements won the high jump with a mark of 2.03 meters, while Omar Barnes was victorious in the triple jump with a leap of 14.73 meters.

The Mavericks' success in field events also included a 4-5 finish in the long jump when Quentin Butler (7.10m) and Kemarki Absalom (7.10m) placed back-to-back.

UTA's best finish in the running events came courtesy of Philip Critelli, who placed third in the 800 meters with a clocking of 1:56.75.

On the women's side. UTA had two medal placements in the triple jump. Jennifer Brown was runner up with a mark of 12.07 meters, while Shae Johnson finished third at 11.81.

In addition, Julianne Burch placed third in the pole vault at 3.75 meters.

The best finish for a Maverick woman also came in the 800 meters, as Lindsey Putman placed third in 2:13.63.

Next week, UT Arlington hosts its annual event, the Bobby Lane Invitational. The event begins Friday afternoon with the hammer throw on the SMU campus. The remainder of the invitational will take place at Maverick Stadium starting at 9 a.m.
