UTA'S PAUL WHITTY NAMED SLC TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

ARLINGTON, Texas --- The University of Texas at Arlington sophomore Paul Whitty (London, Ontario, Canada) was named Southland Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week for the week of January 22.
Whitty won the award after runnning a 7.96 in the 60-meter hurdles finals at the Oklahoma Track Classic in Norman,Okla. Saturday, finishing second. Whitty's time broke the school record of 8.04 that he set last season at the SLC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
He opened the season by running a 7.99 in the preliminaries at Saturday's meet. Whitty missed the NCAA provisional qualifying time (7.95) by .01 seconds. The record time also ties for second in SLC history, which was set by The University of Texas at San Antonio's Carl Johnson in 2001.
The UTA men's and women's track and field teams will return to action Feb. 1 at the Houston/Run Sport All-Comers meet in Houston.
