FORT WORTH - - The UT Arlington men's and women's track teams kicked off the 2008 Outdoor season with a strong showing at the Horned Frog Invitational on Saturday in Fort Worth.
The Mavericks, the 2008 defending Southland Conference Outdoor champions, showed that the sprinter combination of Takeshi Fujiwara and Eddie Beckwith should be tough to handle by the time the conference meet rolls around later this spring.
Fujiwara ran a 47.30 for second place in the 400. That time would have been second-fastest on UTA's squad last season. Beckwith was third with a time of 47.50.
UTA got several other top finishes, including another first-place result from sophomore sprinter Jasmine Walls. She ran an 11.98 for first place in the 100.
Andrew Duncan III recorded a first-place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 48 feet, six inches. Cory Carswell's 15 feet, 4.50 pole vault was good enough for first as well. Shamika Langley was first in the high jump with a leap of 5-1.
UTA returns to the track this weekend for the Bobby Lane Inviational at Maverick Stadium at UTA.
