AUSTIN, Texas - UT Arlington multi-event specialist Romain Martin sits in third place among 23 decathlon participants through the first day of competition at the prestigious 85th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. With 4,099 points, Martin is just 95 points behind the leader, Kurt Felix of Boise State, with five events remaining.
The junior from Le Mans, France, scored big points in the high jump with a first-place showing after a clearance of 2.05 meters. He also had fifth-place finishes in both the shot put (12.92 meters) and the 400 meters (49.12 seconds).
Martin was among the top 10 in the other two events as well, taking sixth in the long jump with a mark of 7.22 meters and eighth in the 100 meters with a clocking of 10.98.
UTA's other participant in the decathlon, James Turner, resides in 13th place with 3,643 points. Turner, a freshman from Kelowna, British Columbia, had a pair of top-10 finishes in the events. He claimed ninth place in the 100 meters (11.01) as well as in the shot put (11.93m).
The remaining decathlon events will start Thursday off beginning with the 110m hurdles at 11 a.m.
