ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington standout Romain Martin has been named the Southland Conference's male track and field athlete of the week after his impressive performance at the Texas Relays last Wednesday and Thursday in Austin.
Martin smashed his own school record in the decathlon, scoring 7,977 points. The Le Mans, France, native was the runner up in the event. He currently ranks second in both the NCAA ratings and in the world rankings by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF).
To highlight the decathlon, Martin won the high jump by clearing the bar at 2.05 meters. He also had top-5 finishes in the pole vault, javelin, 400-meter dash and 110-meter hurdles.
Martin, who has earned All-America accolades twice previously in the indoor season and once in outdoor competition, now leads the Southland in the event by 1,091 points and holds the second-best all-time Southland performance mark.
