T&F: Pep Rally for UTA's Triple Crown Champions
May 12, 2014
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Celebrate the men's Triple Crown at noon Tuesday, May 13, in the Palo Duro Lounge of the E.H. Hereford University Center. Hear from track coach John Sauerhage and student-athletes as UT Arlington comes together to recognize this historic feat. Enjoy pizza, cake, and punch along with music and the Maverick spirit squads.
The men's track and field team completed its mission, winning the program's first triple crown Sunday night at the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in San Marcos.
The Mavericks previously had won the cross country title in November and the indoor championship in February in the school's inaugural year in the Sun Belt.
UTA finished with 145 points to top its closest competitors, Western Kentucky (138) and South Alabama (132). Senior Clayton Vaughn tied for first in the 100 meters, placed second in the 200, and was a member of the winning 4x100 relay team.
"It's been a team effort all year, from the athletes to the coaches to the staff," UT Arlington coach John Sauerhage says. "We came up with clutch performances across the board. We have a group of seniors who wanted it so badly."
The men's outdoor title was the ninth in school history and the first since 2007 when it claimed the Southland Conference crown. No school had won all three sports in the same season in the SBC since 2008 when Western Kentucky achieved the feat.
