MAVS EYE DAY 2 OF SLC TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS

SAN MARCOS, Texas - UTA freshman Tiffaie Reeves captured third place in the women's shot put with a put of 48-feet, 3-.5 inches and senior distance runner Erik Petersson claimed third in the 10,000 meters to highlight the opening day of the 2004 Southland Conference Track and Field Championships here Saturday.
The UTA women are tied for third place afer the opening day with six points. The men's team is fourth, also with six points.
Stephen F. Austin took a commanding lead in both men's and women's competition after Saturday' night's 10,000-meter run. The Lumberjacks had five of the top seven runners to tally 28 points and a 15-point lead over second-place Texas State.
UTA senior Erik Petersson accounted for all of the Mavs' points so far with a third-place finish in the 10,000 meters.
The SFA women had a 1-2 finish by Ashley Monteau and Ana Rodriguez to score 19 points and take a 12-point lead over host Texas State.
Sunday will feature the conclusion of the decathlon and pentathlon, finals in the javelin, long jump and high jump an the 3,000-meter steepelechase finals. Running prelims begin at 6 p.m. Sunday.
