AUSTIN, Texas - The UT Arlington men's and women's track and field teams experienced three near-misses in their four events Saturday at the NCAA West Preliminary Round, as the Mavericks failed to advance any athletes to the NCAA Championships.
LaDoreal Thompson, Shannon Reynolds, Kailey Bostic and Breonna Baldwin were the first to experience a close call, as the quartet placed 14th in the 4x100 relay with a time of 45.46. The top-12 finishers advanced in each event. The group's time was the fifth-fastest in school history.
Reynolds also placed 14th in the 200 meter semifinals to miss out on an NCAA bid by just two spots. Her time was 23.76, while the last time to qualify was 23.54.
The other near miss came from senior Isiah Clements, who closed his career with a tie for 14th in the high jump with a mark of 6 feet, 11 ¾ inches (2.13m). He narrowly missed out on an NCAA Championships appearance, as the 12th and final entrant cleared 7 feet, 1 ½ inches (2.17m).
UTA's final competitor on Saturday was Jeff Rodriguez. He placed 21st in the pole vault with a mark of 5.25 meters (17-02.75).
Despite not advancing any individuals through the NCAA West Preliminary, UTA will be represented in the NCAA Championships by junior Romain Martin, who previously qualified for the finals in the decathlon with the nation's third-best score. He earned All-America accolades in the event a year ago.
