T&F: Martin set for NCAA Championships Wednesday
June 4, 2012
ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington junior multi-event specialist Romain Martin will have his sights set on a number of goals when he competes in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this week in Des Moines, Iowa.
Martin, who is a two-time All-American in the indoor season's heptathlon and was a second-team selection last outdoor season in the decathlon, will compete in the NCAAs multi-event Wednesday and Thursday.
In addition to contending for a national title and All-America honors, Martin is eyeing a score that would qualify him for France's 2012 Olympic Team. A mark of 8,200 points would automatically qualify him for a spot on his native country's team this summer in London, England.
"There are a lot of incentives for Romain this week," head coach John Sauerhage said. "And I think it'll only bring out the best in him. As long as he stays focused one event at a time, he has the opportunity to do very well at the NCAAs."
Both days will feature five events. On Wednesday, Martin will compete in the 100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 meters. The following day, he will wrap up the competition with the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters.
Martin enters the NCAA Championships ranked third in the event. His season-best and school-record point total of 7,977 is behind only Texas' Isaac Murphy (8,067 points) and Florida State's Gonzalo Barroilhet (8,065).
Live results of the meet will be available on NCAA.com.
