DES MOINES, Iowa - Romain Martin stands in eighth place through the first half of the decathlon as he bids for first-team All-America accolades at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Martin has 3,973 points, which is just 92 points out of third place. The leader through five events is Boise State's Kurt Felix (4,187 points).
Martin started slowly before posting personal bests in each of his final three events. He started his run with a ninth-place finish in the shot put, totaling 690 points on a toss of 13.38 meters (43-10 ¾).
He followed that up with a third-place showing (850 points) in the high jump after clearing 2.05 meters (6-8 ¾). In his final event, the 400 meters, Martin finished ninth with a time of 49.08 seconds.
The other day-one events were the 100 meters (15th, 11.13 seconds) and the long jump (14th, 6.70 meters). On Thursday, Martin will wrap up the competition with the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters.
