DES MOINES, Ia. - Romain Martin sits in eighth place after the first day of the decathlon, held Wednesday at the NCAA Championships at Drake University in Des Moines, Ia.

The men's 4x100m relay team of Cordero Gray, Andrew Pettis, Juan Lewis and Clayton Vaughn finished 13th. That foursome clocked a time of 39.62, ranking third all-time in program history.

Vaughn finished ninth in the 100m, clocking a personal-best 10.36 in the event. Gray placed 11th with a time of 10.39.

Jeff Rodriguez cleared a career-high mark of 5.25 meters, enabling him to finish 14th.

Ivan Storic finished 19th in the javelin with a throw of 66.63 meters.

"We competed well, just not well enough," UT Arlington coach John Sauerhage said. "I'm still very proud of the effort. I feel for Cordero, but maybe he can rebound in the 200m.

"Romain is poised for a great second day. He should move up. Day 2 is his best day."
