DENTON, Texas - The UT Arlington women's cross country team won the Ken Garland Invitational championship on Saturday morning at Eagle Point Campus in Denton, while the men's cross country squad finished in second place. Senior Idilio Campos continued his strong running with a first-place finish, while senior Ozie Hood (fourth place) also finished in the top five. The UT Arlington women captured the championship with 17 points, while second-place East Central tallied 71 points.

The Maverick women were led by five runners who all finished in the top 10 on Saturday morning. The event was a 5K race with runners competing from six different universities (North Texas, UT Arlington, Tarleton State, East Central (OK), Northwoods, SMU).

The UT Arlington women were led by senior Caroline Erlingson, who captured her second second-place finish of the season with a time of 18 minutes, 41.9 seconds. Other top 10 finishers for UT Arlington included sophomore Amanda McMahon in third place (18:43.1), junior Christina Mose in fifth place (18:54.3), freshman Jennifer Carey in sixth place (18:55.6) and sophomore Perri Ford in eighth place (18:59.7).

The only other time this season the women's team has had any top 10 finishers also came in Denton in their season-opening meet on Sept. 6.

Campos, a 5-foot-6 senior from Mission, Texas, won the men's 8K Ken Garland championship by 11 seconds over the competition. Campos recorded a time of 25:23.4, while second-place finisher Patrick Strong (North Texas) had a time of 25:34.7.

Tarleton State won the men's competition with 44 points, while the Mavericks were close behind with 47 points. UT Arlington had two runners finish in the top 10 as senior Ozie Hood (25:54.3) recorded a fourth-place finish. Hood also finished fourth in the first meet of the season in Denton.

Overall, East Central had four top 10 finishers, while champion Tarleton State had five runners inside the top 12.

Other top finishers for UT Arlington included, sophomore Zach Zura (13th - 26:45.7), sophomore Heinz Schwarzkopf (14th - 26:49.7) and senior Ivan Pinal (15th - 26:53.8).

Both cross country teams will be in action on Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Oklahoma State Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla., with the meet beginning at 8 a.m.
