ARLINGTON, Texas - The 2016 Inaugural Blazing 5K Open Division Run, in conjunction with the Gerald Richey Invitational, consisted of more than a dozen runners and raised money to support the UT Arlington cross country programs Saturday at Lynn Creek Park.
Dylan Thomas finished first in the men's open division with a time of 17:37, and Alexandra Chand won the female open division in 20:07.
"This was a great first showing for the Blazing 5K Open Division Run," UTA cross country head coach John Sauerhage said. "I hope it grows into a tradition for our cross country alumni, friends and dedicated runners. It's great to know there are people wanting to help support our program."
The Mavericks opened their 2016 campaign in victorious fashion, claiming the Gerald Richey Invitational title with a perfect 15 points. The women placed third among a competitive field.
The men's program vaulted to its second-highest regional ranking in school history in this week's United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll. UTA improved two spots to No. 4 in the South Central Region after dominating the top five individual places on Saturday.
Michael Guerrero was named the Sun Belt Conference Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week for his performance in the invitational, the league office announced Tuesday. The junior completed the 3.2-mile layout in 15:28.9 to win by 8.5 seconds in the 40-runner field.
UTA returns to action Saturday at the Ken Garland Invitational in Denton. The first race is set to begin at 8 a.m.
