ARLINGTON - - For the second time in as many chances, UT Arlington senior distance runner Idilio Campos has picked up weekly honors by the Southland Conference.
For his efforts Friday night at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Texas, Campos has been named the Southland Conference Male Cross Country Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Campos finished fifth overall at the meet, running the 8000-meter course in 24 minutes, 42.01 seconds. He led the Mavericks to a fifth-place finish in the 12-team field.
Running on their home course, the Aggies took the top four places. Campos was the highest-finishing runner not from Texas A&M. He defeated 14 other Southland Conference runners from Sam Houston and SFA. He defeated 19 runners from the Big 12 (A&M and Baylor).
Honorable mention for this week's honor went to Taylor Ray of Sam Houston.
Campos now has two Top 5 finishes.
In the North Texas Invitational to open the season, Campos finished third and took home the SLC's Male Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors. In that race, he covered the 4-mile Eagle Point Cross Country Course in 21 minutes, 7.95 seconds. His performance helped lead the Mavericks to a team victory in the meet that also included TCU, Northwood and North Texas.
The Mavericks men and women compete Sept. 27 at the North Texas Invitational in Denton.
