Cross country set for Cowboy Stampede Saturday
Oct. 8, 2010
Arlington, Texas - More than 600 athletes will take part in the Asics McNeese Cowboy cross country stampede Saturday in Lake Charles, La.
The Mavericks enter Saturday's meet fully rested after one week off. UT Arlington is coming off an impressive performance at the Islander Splash Invitational on Sept. 24. The women's squad captured second place while the men's team finished third overall.
"The women will face quite a challenge in tomorrow's meet," said Head Coach John Sauerhage. "If we have aspirations for a top three finish or contending for the championship we got to get around McNeese State first. Giving them a good race, if not beating them this weekend will be a nice goal for the girls this weekend."
Freshman Emily Koenig had another standout performance, crossing the finishing line in first place with a time of 17:45. Koenig has now captured two first place titles in the team's three meets.
"Emily should be one of the favorites in this race. It will be one more opportunity to have a good run before we go to the Chili Pepper Invitational where I can promise you she will have her hands full," added Sauerhage.
Sophomore Cody Widener led the men's team for the second time, finishing in 15th place finish with a time of 27:12 at the Islander Splash Invite.
Saturday's meet will feature college, high school, junior high and elementary competition along with an open fun run.
The field of teams includes host McNeese State, LSU, UL-Lafayette, Southeastern Louisiana, Louisiana Tech, Northwestern State, Central Arkansas, and Dillard.
The women will run a 5K beginning at 8:45 a.m. while the men will run four miles starting at 9:15 a.m.
