From Jim's Desk
We're off and running this semester … or should I say, spiking! Our volleyball team is tied for fourth place in the Sun Belt and coming off a rewarding week both on and off the court. Dig Pink Night proved to be a great success even before your Mavericks stormed back to beat Texas State in five sets. That ended a five-match losing streak to the Bobcats. Speaking of Dig Pink, your generosity raised more than $600 to help fight breast cancer.
The weekend continued with and the 5th Annual Volleyball Alumni Day. More than 25 former UT Arlington student-athletes participated in another wonderful event, which also happened to be our second alumni event of the month. Baseball held its Alumni Game, Golf Tournament and Family Barbeque the previous weekend. More than 70 former players attended. Read more about it here and view our photo gallery. Here's more info on the Athletic Alumni Chapter.
Congratulations are in order for three of our former baseball players. Hunter Pence was rewarded with a new contract by the San Francisco Giants, Michael Choice was called up to the Majors with the Oakland A's and Los Angeles Dodgers bench coach Trey Hillman is in the NLCS. Maybe we should open a UT Arlington Baseball alumni branch in California.
Save this date of Jan. 17 as Texas Rangers CEO and baseball legend Nolan Ryan joins us as the featured guest at the First Pitch Banquet. Rangers Ballpark in Arlington is hosting the event at the Capital 1 Club at 6:30 p.m.
Men's and women's basketball tips off this week with Maverick Madness, a showcase of both teams at College Park Center. The fun starts at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) and features AcroDunk, a high-flying aerial dunk team that performs at NBA arenas and has appeared on America’s Got Talent. Admission is free. UTA students with an All-Sports Pass ($25) can also enjoy the free food and beverages while supplies last. Free t-shirts and other items will also be given away.
Season tickets to men's and women's basketball are on sale, and can be ordered here, by visiting utatickets.com or by calling (817) 272-9595. Premium seats, which include a donation to the Maverick Club, are also available. Click here to pay the donation portion of your tickets. The ticket portion can be paid for by clicking here. We need your support at all of our games. Let's fill up College Park Center because you really make a difference.
The Maverick Club is hosting its next luncheon at First Baptist Church Arlington on Oct. 22 at noon. First Baptist is a huge supporter of UT Arlington Athletics and we're honored to bring the luncheon to our next-door neighbors. Check back with us on upcoming locations for future Maverick Club luncheons. To join the Maverick Club, please contact Leigh Coggiola at (817) 272-0694 or email@example.com.
Homecoming is fast approaching. Join us Nov. 14 as we celebrate the Homecoming Parade, a 5K, chili cook-off, and coronation of the Homecoming king and queen. And of course we've got basketball that night at College Park Center with the men's team facing Cleveland State at 7:30 p.m.
Congrats to our men's double team of Daniel Armengol and Javier Perez for winning the doubles title at the Columbia Classic in New York. Giada D'ortona was also a winner in the Big Apple, claiming a singles title at the USTA BJK NTC Women's College Invitational this past weekend. Cross country and men's golf are also in season. Follow all of our teams at UTAMavs.com.
Finally, we've released our 2012-13 Annual Report. The Annual Report provides a snapshot of our entire department, detailing our academic, athletic, administrative and financial performance for the 2012-13 academic year. We're committed to providing an Annual Report every year to chart the progress and UT Arlington Athletics.
