ARLINGTON, Texas -- The unofficial start to the season for many Maverick fans took place earlier this week at the program's annual "An Evening With The Mavericks" preseason tipoff event at College Park Center.
With the UTA men and women's basketball teams each predicted to be among the top contenders for a Sun Belt title this season, anticipation for the upcoming season is at an all-time high. Before the event even began, ticket demand caused a move from the event's traditional location in the Yelverton, Alexander, and Cravens-Wysong Hospitality Suites outside to a larger space in front of College Park Center.
On a perfect evening outdoors and following a great dinner provided by Spring Creek Barbeque, athletic director Jim Baker welcomed the crowd and provided some interesting highlights of the two programs heading into the season. He also spoke about the great crowd support each team received last year and how Mavericks fans and students in College Park Center really helped the men's team in its run to the National Invitation Tournament quarterfinals at the end of the season.
Voice of the Mavericks Josh Sours introduced two players from each team for an interesting conversation about some of the nuances of each program -- Crystal Allen and Cierra Johnson from the Lady Mavs and Kevin Hervey and Erick Neal from the men's team.
Sours then conducted a question-and-answer session about the upcoming season with head coaches Scott Cross and Krista Gerlich before the student-athletes from both teams were presented and introduced themselves.
