Dec. 19, 2013
Did you enjoy the fall semester? Our seven graduating student-athletes sure did. Congratulations to Megan Casey, Desherra Nwanguma, Kiara Parker, Brandon Edwards, Giada D'ortona, Kallan Thompson and Cody Widener for walking the stage, and all the other UT Arlington graduates who took part in commencement ceremonies at College Park Center. Best of luck to everyone in their future endeavors! You'll always be part of the UT Arlington family!
While men's and women's basketball season is in full swing, let's take a step back to honor the accomplishments of Diane Seymour and the volleyball team on reaching the finals of the Sun Belt Tournament. Volleyball more than doubled their win total, going from nine victories to 19, before falling one match short of the NCAA Tournament. Charmaine Whitmore and Taylor Gross were both named to the Sun Belt All-Tournament team. What a wonderful season and we look forward to an even better 2014.
As for basketball, we're closing in on the Sun Belt Conference season. The men's team is improving with each game, and put a serious scare into Texas and Oklahoma on the road. It's only a matter of time before we get one of those last-second shots to fall. Reger Dowell and Brandon Edwards are among the country's leaders in scoring and rebounding, respectively. The women continue to show progress. Believe me they're fighting every time out.
This Saturday we're hosting a nonconference doubleheader at College Park Center, with the men facing CSU Bakersfield at 1 p.m. and the women following against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 3:30 p.m. Plenty of good seats are available at UTATickets.com.
Half-priced tickets are also available for this weekend's doubleheader, plus the three men's and women's doubleheaders to start Sun Belt play. We've have Arkansas State (Jan. 2), UALR (Jan. 4) and UL-Monroe (Jan. 9) coming to CPC. Help us create a real homecourt advantage and make a great first impression to our first set of SBC visitors.
We've have another huge event next month that you can be a part of. The First Pitch Fundraiser, featuring Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan, is Jan. 17 at the Capital 1 Club at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. The evening gets started at 6:30 p.m., with tickets ($50 adults/$25 students) at UTATickets.com.
Sponsorship packages are available for $2000, which includes eight (8) passes to meet-and-photo opportunity with Ryan, a Ryan autographed jersey and Ryan autographed baseballs. For sponsorships, please contact Craig Shaver at 817-272-9608 and/or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Congrats are also in order for UT Arlington alums Zack Fischer (golf) and Michael Choice (baseball). Zack claimed the top-seed and a full exemption on the Web.com Tour in 2014 by winning the six-round Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament. He birdied the last two holes to claim the tournament. Michael is coming home after being traded to the Texas Rangers. According to Rangers general manager Jon Daniels, Michael will be given every opportunity to be in the Opening Day starting lineup.
