XC: Lewis represents UTA and Sun Belt in Chicago

Oct. 26, 2017

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Earlier this month, UTA senior Chloe Lewis was chosen to serve as the Sun Belt Conference representative at the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Fall Meeting in Chicago.

Lewis, a track and field athlete who participates in throwing events and owns the fourth-best indoor weight throw in school history, serves as the UTA SAAC president. UTA SAAC members are dedicated to discussing campus, departmental and national issues of concern to student-athletes.

Lewis was able take her UTA experiences with her to the national meeting and give a voice to her constituents regarding issues that truly matter to NCAA student-athletes.

"It was an honor to sit at a table with 30-plus student-athletes from all over the country and represent the Sun Belt, the state of Texas and UT Arlington," she said. "I love this school and I was able to tell everyone that big things are happening at UT Arlington and to show them what UTA has allowed me to be."

Lewis has been involved with SAAC since her freshman year. She joined the organization because she is a "spirited person who loves sports." Shortly after starting with SAAC, she knew that she wanted to one day be the group's leader. That decision ultimately led her to the two-day conference (Oct. 14-15).

"The saying `Once a Maverick, always a Maverick.' That's what I felt there," Lewis said.

SAAC's stated purpose is to provide student-athletes the opportunity to communicate more effectively with UTA athletic administration, coaches and staff. It enables student-athletes to provide recommendations for the improvement of academic, athletic and social experiences. The committee encourages unity, common purpose and camaraderie between teams and among all student-athletes.

UTA's SAAC consists of nearly three dozen appointed student-athletes representing each of the Mavericks' teams. SAAC also includes athletic department staff as advisors and resources. Student development specialist Tim Kennedy oversees the group.

"I think what he (Kennedy) has done overseeing SAAC the last four years is phenomenal," Lewis said. "He has redefined us and helped us connect the athletic department to the campus. We've won the conference's community service challenge the last two years and are looking for a three-peat."

Lewis is an interdisciplinary studies major with emphases in theatre performance and public relations. She will graduate in December of 2018.
