UTA's SAAC Active During Holiday Season

Dec. 12, 2017

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The UTA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has been honored with the Sun Belt Conference Community Service Initiative for the last two months and continues to be a positive force in the Arlington community.

UTA has been active throughout the fall sports season in the community, wrapping up its canned food drive as the conference winner, and among a litany of activities also participated with Mission Arlington in meal packing.

The UTA SAAC is leading the overall Sun Belt Community Service Initiative and have won two consecutive years of the award.

"Our student-athletes did an outstanding job with the canned food drive this semester," Tim Kennedy, UTA's student-development specialist and SAAC director, said. "They collected over 5,000 canned foods and that was 1,000 over the goal for this year. Some of our student-athletes took time out of their busy schedules and went shopping for canned goods, loaded them on a truck from Mission Arlington or personally delivered them to Mission Arlington."

A total of 5,087 canned foods were collected by UTA's student-athletes, with baseball leading the way among UTA's teams with 905, with women's track and field ranking second with 683 and the Lady Mavericks checking in third with 550 canned foods collected.

"Our student-athletes also spent a couple of hours making over 7,000 meals that were also donated to Mission Arlington," Kennedy said. "They teamed up with 'The Pack Shack' organization and were able to make a lot of meals that Mission Arlington will be able to pass on to needy families in the Arlington area. A big thank you to E-Sports for sponsoring the event."
