ARLINGTON, Texas -- UT Arlington student-athletes continue to graduate at the highest rate in program history and one of the highest among Division I institutions in the state of Texas, according to figures released last month by the NCAA.
For the second-straight year, UTA owns the second-highest graduation success rate for student-athletes among all public institutions in Texas and the fifth-highest among each of the 23 NCAA Division I programs in the state.
UTA also places second among the 12 full-time members of the Sun Belt Conference and, for the sixth straight year, has set the program’s highest percentage.
A total of 85 percent of Maverick student-athletes entering or transferring to UTA in 2010-11 completed their undergraduate degrees within a 6-year period.
UTA’s GSR is tied with Texas Christian University for fifth best in the state and is just two percentage points behind the University of Texas and University of the Incarnate Word for third. Rice University leads the state with a 92 percent GSR for its student-athletes, followed by Baylor at 89 percent.
"The recent NCAA Graduation Success Rate report showed that UT Arlington student-athletes continue to achieve tremendous academic success," said UTA executive senior associate athletic director Debbie Garcia. "Having one of the best graduation success rates in the state of Texas and setting a program record for the sixth straight year is quite an achievement.
“The department’s strong GSR is reflective of the commitment of our coaches and academic support staff as well as the University’s administration, faculty and staff that contribute greatly to the academic experience of our students."
Led by Garcia, the department’s full-time academic support staff consists of associate athletic director Mishael Berger and student development specialists Courtney Burken, Megan Kassabian, Tim Kennedy and Mary Russell. The department also employs several part-time staff members to assist in the academic success of its student-athletes.
The UTA athletics program sponsors 15 NCAA Division I intercollegiate sports that compete as full members of the Sun Belt Conference. In 2016-17 Maverick sports teams claimed three league titles, finished in third place (just 4 points shy of 1st) in the league’s Bubas Cup all-sports competition and claimed the conference’s SAAC Community Service Champion award.
