Ron Powell enters his seventh season as a member of the women's basketball coaching staff and his second as the team's associate head coach. Powell's primary responsibilities are to assist coach Capps with recruiting, scheduling, teaching and other duties beneficial to the program. Powell returned to the sidelines after spending 10 years as an administrator with the Dallas Independent School District. He served as the principal at Central and Gooch Elementary, while also serving as as the assistant principal at Mark Twain Elementary School and A. Maceo Smith High School. Powell entered the coaching profession in 1966 when he served four years on coaching staffs at Wolfe City High School and Sherman Junior High. Powell spent 18 seasons at North Mesquite High School developing the men's and women's basketball programs and leading them to the state tournament in 1982. Powell served as the chairman of the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Basketball team, as well as the chairman of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-State selection committee and Texas Player of the Year committee. He was a featured speaker at the State High School Coaches Association and TABC conventions. In 1986,Powell served one season as the recruiting and scouting coordinator on coach Gerald Myers' staff at Texas Tech. After just one season, Powell returned to the high school ranks where he became the head boy's basketball coach at South Oak Cliff High School. In each of his two seasons, Powell took a team that was picked to finish last in the district and led them to the state tournament. In 1988, Powell led his Bears to the state semifinals before UTA assistant coach Derrick Daniels drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to eliminate SOC. Powell returned to the college ranks in 1989 as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Stephen F. Austin. Powell helped the Lumberjacks turn around their program from three wins the year before he arrived to a 17-9 mark in his first season. Powell received his B.S., M.S. and his educational mid-management certification from Texas A&M-Commerce University. He is married to Carol, who is coordinator of elementary special education curriculum and instruction in Dallas ISD. The couple has one son, Mark. |
