ARLINGTON, Texas -- Rebekah VanDijk charted her school-record 43rd-career double-double to lead the UTA Lady Mavericks to a 70-61 win over ULM on Saturday afternoon at College Park Center.
UTA (10-9, 4-4 Sun Belt Conference) cruised to the win over ULM (4-14, 1-6 Sun Belt) behind a strong defensive effort that held the Warhawks to under 35-percent from the field and a dynamic all-around performance from VanDijk.
The Lady Mavs led nearly throughout, with ULM's lone lead coming in the opening minutes of the first quarter. UTA owned a 44-37 advantage on the backboards, scoring 32 points in the paint and owning a 23-18 advantage in points off the bench.

VanDijk's second basket of the game lifted UTA to a 9-7 lead with just under five minutes left in the opening stanza. Machado's jumper and a pair of buckets at the rim from VanDijk helped push the Mavs to a 15-10 lead at the quarter break.
Allen needed seven seconds to drill a triple to open the second quarter, and Miranda LeJune's 3-pointer from the corner gave the Mavs their largest lead of the game, 21-11 with eight minutes left. After ULM answered with a three of its own, Brooke Alexander, a game after a near double-double off the bench, got to the rim to give UTA a 24-14 lead. The Warhawks spurted back into it behind a 10-0 run, notching back-to-back buckets and a triple in transition to cut the UTA lead to three with three minutes left in the period. Allen gave UTA the lead back at 26-24 with a pair at the charity stripe as the quarter ended. VanDijk led the Mavs with 11 points on four buckets in the first half.
The Mavs responded out of the break, with VanDijk's offensive board and put-back giving UTA a four-point lead to open the third. VanDijk then notched a pair of buckets in the paint - the last on a nifty find from Allen - as UTA used a 6-0 run to open the half. Allen sank a triple to give the Mavs an 11 point lead at the media timeout but ULM answered with a quick 3-0 run. Back-to-back buckets in the paint by VanDijk kept the lead at double figures. A basket from Machado opened the scoring for the Mavs, with VanDijk continuing her dynamic game with a pair of baskets at the rim for a 50-39 lead with under eight minutes left. The Lady Mavs steadly maintained a double-figure lead, as a jumper from Machado took UTA into the media timeout with a 14-point lead. After ULM cut it to ingle digits, a pair of breakaways from McGowen gave UTA a 61-48 lead with under three minutes left. The Warhawks cut the lead to seven before Allen drained a wide-open look from the wing to put UTA up 64-54 in the closing minute. ULM ended the game connecting on six of its last eight shots but UTA held off the charge to ear the win.
