Jan. 24, 2008
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - UT Arlington women's basketball dropped its first Southland Conference game of the season 76-53 to UTSA on Thursday at the Convocation Center. Sophomore LaTosha Duffey led UTA with nine points, while senior Tiffeny Riles, freshman Tamara Simmons and junior Candice Champion chipped in with eight points apiece. The Mavericks (9-7, 4-1 SLC) shot 40 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 19 times, which led to 25 points for the Roadrunners (11-6, 3-1 SLC). With an eight-point contribution from Jordan Stark, UTSA jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game. Riles finally got the Mavericks on the board with a layup at the 17:28 mark. With 5:48 left in the first half, Champion sank a pair of free throws to bring the Mavs within two (19-21) of the 'Runners. UTSA used an 11-6 run to closeout the half with a seven-point advantage (32-25) heading into the locker room. With 12:42 on the clock in the second half, the Roadrunners had built their largest lead of the game at 24-points (32-56) behind an old fashion three-point play from Terrie Davis. Duffey answered with her first of three 3-point shots on the night to spark a 10-2 run to bring the Mavericks within 16 with 10:19 left to play. Duffey hit another tre with 5:35 left on the clock to get UTA to within 14, but unfortunately it was as close as they would get the rest of the way. UTSA closed out the game with an 11-2 run, and hand the Mavs their first conference loss of the season. Mavs return to Texas Hall for their next SLC match-up with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
