ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington women's basketball remains unbeaten in conference play with a 79-50 win over Texas State Friday night. With the win the Mavericks set a new record for Southland Conference wins with nine, besting its previous eight wins set in 2005. Senior Terra Wallace and junior Maryann Abanobi led the Mavs scoring 21-points each in the win.

The Bobcats (13-9, 6-3) had two players score in double digits, led by Joyce Ekworomadu with 11 points. Erica Putnam added 10 points and eight boards for Texas State.

Tiffeny Riles struck first for the Mavericks 20 seconds into the game. Ashley Riley hit a jumper to tie the game 2-2 two minutes later. At the 14:53 mark both teams had added four to keep it tied 6-6. Wallace hit back-to-back threes to give UTA the 14-11 advantage with 11:23 left in the first half.

At the 9:09 mark senior Tojjinay Thompson hit a lay-up to put the Mavs ahead 18-13. Abanobi hit a basket from long range to increase UTA's lead to eight (23-15) with 7:04 left in the half.

Riles converted on an old fashion three point play at the 6:10 mark and Abanobi hit a lay-up to extend the Mavs lead to 11 (31-20) with 3:57 left in the half. Wallace converted on a pair of free throws with 52 seconds left on the clock to put UTA up 39-23 heading into the locker room.

UTA outscored the Bobcats 7-2 in the opening minutes of the second half to lead 46-25 with 15:02 on the clock. At the 11:49 mark, Riles converted on a pair of free throws to give UTA the 19-point advantage (48-29). Abanobi hit back-to-back jumpers to extend the Mavericks lead to 21 (52-31) with 10:11 left in the game.

The Bobcats put together an 8-0 run sparked by a jumper from Ekworomadu to get back within 13 (52-39) with 7:26 left on the clock. UTA answered with a 14-3 run of its own to lead 66-41 with 4:42 left in the game. The Mavs closed out the game with a 13-9 run for the win.

 

 

UTA will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007 when it travels to Beaumont, Texas to take-on Lamar. Tip is set for 7 p.m. at the Montagne Center.
