"I really liked the way we started the game. We really came out with energy and really good defensive pressure. We wanted to try to speed it up a little bit in the full court and try to pressure them. They have a really good point guard. Amira Atwater does a really good job of getting by you. I thought we got going early. Part of our game plan was to go inside early. I thought our kids did a really good job with that. (Rebekah) crashed the boards, when she missed or the ball was shot. I thought she gave us chances to get easy buckets early. I challenged them in the second quarter. I thought we were playing them even and we didn't extend our lead as much as we wanted to. The last two minutes of the third quarter we really extended our lead and built on it. That gave us a little breathing room and gave some people some extra minutes in the last quarter. It was a consistent game all the way through.
"The girls had a goal of holding them under 50. Obviously, they did that. I just was really proud of their focus on the game play. Since Georgia Southern last game, since we lost the last game to them, our team has been very committed to defense. Committed to following the game plan and scout. Just committed to being a better basketball team. I think you can see that in our production and what we've done since then. That might have been the reason we needed to lose to them. We dissected that film so much. That made us go back to the basics and go back and work on the little things that can set us apart in this conference.
(Kids Day) "My favorite game of the year, no doubt. It is awesome. There was such a good turnout with the rainy day. So much of that is out of our control. They did a great job. Our marketing department and administration did a great job of filling up the seats. It is a lot of fun. It is fun to see the kids get excited. It is an opportunity of us to give back to the community and for them to see some role models that are right down the street. I love that we have such good kids that are good role models for them. They play hard. They are respectful. They have a lot of pride for UTA. They set the tone for all those kids. Hopefully, all those kids become Mavericks one day."
UTA Senior Center Rebekah VanDijk
"We really played hard today. Georgia Southern was our last loss, so I think we had to get a little payback. That was on everone's mind. We just wanted to play really hard. Having the kids in the arena was a lof fun. They are really noisy and the cheer really loud. So that is really nice for us.
"(Against Georgia State on Saturday) "I think we are going to just need to play really hard, again. It was a really close game the last time. We are going to have to play at the top of our game. We are going to have to play good defense and play our game.
(Biggest difference in current win streak) "I think our defense (has been the difference). We have really stepped it up. When we played Georgia Southern and lost, I think that was a turning point for us. We really focused on our defense. That is what we focus on every game, so that is huge for us.
UTA Junior Forward Daiane Machado
"I just played hard. I have been waiting for this day. I have been trying and trying (to achieve a double-double in points and rebounds). I would get nine points and rebounds. Yesterday, I talked to Coach Gerlich. She said I needed a double-double. I said I needed one, too. I just worked hard. My team is helping me a lot. They trust me and I trust them. No matter who is scoring, as long as we win everything is good.
"I really feel like I am home. And, now that it is raining it is just like Brazil.
"It was really good to see the little kids (at the game). I think that pushes us. One day, they can be like us. We just wanted to have fun and put on a show (for them). Everyone can (achieve their goals) if they work hard. I am really happy to be a role model for them. I have a little sister. Maybe Coach Gerlich should recruit her. She is going to be small, a guard.
"Even if there is a bad pass, I feel like (Rebekah) is going to catch it. She is a great player. So far, she is the best post player I have played with. I love to play with her. She is really smart. She is unselfish. She shares the ball. Even if she is not playing well, she shares the ball. I really am not good with playing with my back to the basket. To see how she (does it). Since, next year, she is going to be gone I am going to have to learn more from her."
