THIBODAUX, La. - Texas-Arlington held Nicholls State without a field goal for more than eight minutes in the second half and made 14-of-18 free throws in the final 2:12 of the game to escape with a 67-62 win over the Lady Colonels in a Southland Conference game at Stopher Gym here Saturday afternoon.

UTA(16-11, 10-5), who won for the fifth time seven games, can assure themselves of third place in the league and homecourt in the first round of the upcoming postseason tournament, March 9-13, with a win over Sam Houston State on Wednesday. Nicholls State, which has not had a winning season in the program's 30-year existence, falls to 2-23 overall and 1-13 in the SLC.

Junior forward Rola Ogunoye scored in double figures for the 20th straight games and led UTA with 16 points. Krystal Buchanan chipped in 14 and freshman guard Terra Wallace added 13 points and five assists. Senior center Temeckia Brown finished with a season-high nine points. Christin Burdette canned five 3-pointers for 17 points to lead Nicholls State.

UTA held Nicholls State without a field goal for 8:44 of the second half to build a 53-46 lead after a Krystal Buchanan 3-pointer with 3:03 to play in the game. Nicholls State then began to foul, sending UTA to the line where they made 14-of-18 in the final 2:12 of the game to seal the win.

A 3-pointer by Burdette with 14 seconds to play cut the lead to 65-62, but UTA kept the ball away until a foul by Marneshia Bryant with :04 to play sent Wallace to the line where she made both free throws to lead 67-62.

UTA looked in a daze from Thursday's 77-69 overtime loss to league-leading Northwestern State in the first half. UTA made 2-of-9 field goals to begin the game and scored just three field goals in the first nine minutes of the game to trail 13-10 after a basket by NSU's Lisa Lawrence witrh 11:13 to play in the first half. UTA committed 14 turnovers in the first half, including Ogunoye's third foul of an offensive push off in the final minute.

 

 

A 9-4 run midway through the half gave UTA a 17-15 edge after a basket by Ogunoye with 6:51 to play. UTA led 26-24 at halftime.
