ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington Mavericks defeated the Denver Pioneers 66-55 Thursday night at College Park Center.
"I think tonight was just a great team win," UT Arlington coach Karen Blair said about her third win as interim head coach. "We struggled a little bit from the wings this season so it was good to see us scoring."
UTA improves to 4-13 in the Western Athletic Conference and 7-21 overall.
The Mavericks started the game with a 6-0 run, but the Pioneers came back with their own 6-0 run to tie the game. The Mavericks pulled away leading by as much as 10 points.
Denver's leading scorer Morgan Van Riper-Rose hit back-to-back 3-pointers to help close the gap. Jordan Holub knocked down her third jump shot of the half before Van Riper-Rose would grab another 3-pointer.
UT Arlington headed into the locker room up 29-25 at the end of the first half after shooting 44.8 percent from the floor.
Denver saw their first lead of the game when Emiko Smith picked up two points to give the Pioneers a 40-39 lead.
UTA took the lead, but Denver would not let up and continued to keep the game close. The Mavs led by as much as 10 points in the final seconds of the game.
Van Riper-Rose led both teams with26 points.
The Mavericks are back on the court for Senior Night Saturday, March 9 at 6 p.m. in College Park Center as they take on the New Mexico State Aggies.
