LADY MAVS ROLL TO 97-63 VICTORY OVER HOUSTON ELITE

ARLINGTON, Texas - After falling behind by two-points in the games first 13 seconds, The University of Texas at Arlington women's basketball team quickly regained the lead on a Krystal Buchanan three-pointer and never looked back enroute to a 97-63 victory over the Texas Elite in its first exhibition game of the season Thursday evening at Texas Hall. With 13 players dressed for the game, fourth-year head coach Donna Capps decided to use a platoon system in which she substituted a group of five new players every five minutes, with the other three players rotating in with the two groups. "I saw a lot of bright spots in tonight's game," said Capps. "We played very strong defense in spurts, but need to keep up our defensive intensity for the entire game." The system did not seem to affect the flow of the Lady Mavs offense as UTA used an outside explosion to take a 49-31 lead into the intermission. Sophomore KaShayla Hawkins led the offense with 10 first half points. In the half, the Lady Mavs shot .531 (17-32) from the floor and .500 (7-14) from behind the arc.
UTA hit its only scoring drought coming out of the locker room in the second half as it scored only one field goal in the first 4:53, allowing the Houston Elite to trim the lead the 12 points, before regaining its offensive form in re-building its lead to as many as 38-points before the final margin of 34 points.
Wallace led five Lady Mavs in double figures with 13 points. She was joined in double figures by Hawkins and Rola Ogunoye with 12 points apiece and LaToya Lewis and Tamesha Graves with 11 points each. Wallace added a game-high eight assists while Krystal Buchanan added six helpers. Andi Jackson led the Houston Elite with 23 points. As a team, UTA shot 34-of-66 (.515) from the floor and 10-of-24 (.417) from behind the arc. The Lady Mavs held their opponents to just 19-of-57 (.333) from the floor and forced them into 37 turnovers. The Lady Mavs close out the exhibition season on Monday, Nov. 17 as they host the Houston Jaguars. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at Texas Hall and is part of a doubleheader with the UTA men. |
