ARLINGTON, Texas - A slow start in Saturday's opener was long forgotten after UTA raced by Oral Roberts 70-46 on Monday night at College Park Center in nonconference play.
The Lady Mavericks improved to 2-0 as it put a stamp on the two-game homestand to open up the campaign. UTA went back-and-forth with Incarnate Word Saturday, but led by as many as 30 points against Oral Roberts during a stretch of the third quarter. The offense shined with 50.9 percent shooting helped along by a career-high 22 points by senior Crystal Allen.
The win improved the Lady Mavs' all-time mark against the Golden Eagles to 4-7 and erased a brief two-game streak to their Summit League opponents. Oral Roberts went to 0-2 on the season after falling to TCU in its opener.
An offensive explosion in the first half saw the Lady Mavs starters rest for much of the second half, but Cierra Johnson would join in double figures with 10. Johnson and Rebekah VanDijk each had milestone achievements early. Johnson's steal early in the contest moved her into a tie for 15th in Sun Belt history with 249 in her career. VanDijk swatted away three shots in the first half to move up to 20th in league history with 147.
A quick stretch of three games in five days comes to an end on Wednesday night with UTA going on the road for the first time. The Lady Mavs head south to visit former conference foe UTSA at 7 p.m. UTA and UTSA played in both the Southland and WAC.
