WBB: Mavs come up short, 52-48, to UIW

ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington's bid for its first victory of the season came up short Thursday night, as Incarnate Word slipped past the Mavericks 52-48 before 633 fans at College Park Center.
UT Arlington (0-3) rallied to take the lead late in the second half, but couldn't hold on against the Cardinals. Incarnate Word (2-0) finished the game with a 10-2 run to secure the victory.
Senior guard Malaika Green paced the Mavericks with 10 points. Senior forward Briana Walker had nine points and seven rebounds, while freshman forward Allyson Te'o had seven points and eight boards off the bench.
The Mavericks got out of the gate with a 7-0 lead, forcing a timeout from Incarnate Word. UT Arlington took its biggest lead at 20-12 on Allea Harris' 3-pointer with less than seven minutes left in the first half.
The Cardinals cut into the deficit, closing within 24-21 to close out the half. Green, Allyson Te'o and Harris each had five points at the break. Te'o added six rebounds.
The Mavericks did a number on UIW defensively, limiting the Cardinals to only three field goals on 21 attempts over the first 20 minutes. The 21 points were the fewest allowed by UT Arlington in a half this season.
The Cardinals opened the second half by scoring the first seven points and taking a 28-24 lead. The Mavericks trailed for much of the half from there before tying the game at 41 on Tahlia Pope's jumper with seven minutes remaining.
UTA inched back ahead 44-42 on Green's jumper from the wing with 4:32 left. The Cardinals retook the lead 48-47 with two minutes remaining and held on for the win.
The Mavericks are back on the road Sunday at UTSA, renewing a longstanding rivalry with the Roadrunners.
