Morehead, KY - Despite four Mavericks finishing in double-digit scoring, the Mavs dropped a 70-65 decision against Morehead State on Sunday, November 30 at the Ellis T. Johnson Arena. UTA fell to 2-3 on the season while Morehead State improved to 4-2 overall.
Four missed free throws in the final two minutes of the game proved costly for the Mavericks as they were unable to make key defensive stops in the final moments of the game.
Candice Champion led the Mavs with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Erin Dixon notched her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and a career-high 19 rebounds.
The Mavericks led things off on a 5-0 run led by seniors Champion and Dixon. Morehead State tied the game at 5-5 at the 14:59 mark following a pair of Brittany Pittman free throws.
Sophomore Shalyn Martin kept the Mavs in striking distance hitting back-to-back three's to put UTA up 15-13 with 8:05 left in the first half.
Chynna Bozeman kept the Eagles alive scoring 13 of Morehead's 27 points in the first half alone. The Mavericks continued to push the ball up the court hustling their way to a 37-27 advantage heading into halftime.
Dixon highlighted the first half collecting 10 defensive rebounds while Martin notched 11 points, nine of them coming from behind the arc.
UTA finished the first half shooting 46.7 percent (14-of-30) from the field to Morehead's 25 percent (8-of-32) from the floor.
With the Mavericks leading by nine points following a Champion layup, the Eagles went on an 11-4 run sparked by a Tiffany Hamilton three pointer. MSU's Courtney Lumpkin gave the Eagles a one-point advantage with 11:07 left on the clock but Meghan Nelson quickly tied the game at 49-49 after a made free throw.
UTA and MSU went back-in-forth tying the game four times but the Eagles were able to capitalize on two key defensive stops and sink seven free throws for the victory.

Martin and Nelson each contributed 11 points apiece and Tamara Simmons added six points.
Bozeman notched a game-high 19 points while Pittman recorded 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Eagles.
The Mavericks will return back to the court on Tuesday, December 2 with a match-up against Marshall University in Huntington, W. Va. with game time set for 4 p.m.
