WBB: UTA heads to Atlanta to face Georgia State

ARLINGTON, Texas - 
The east coast has been kind to UT Arlington under coach Krista Gerlich and the Lady Mavs look to continue that trend with a two-game road trip that opens at Georgia State on Thursday.

The Lady Mavericks are 13-3 when playing in the eastern time zone since Gerlich's hiring and if the records hold, UTA can push its winning streak to three games. After topping ULM on Saturday, the Lady Mavs moved to 10-9 on the season and 4-4 in the Sun Belt.

Georgia State picked up its first win of league play when it downed rival Georgia Southern 71-56 on Saturday. The win moved GSU to 5-13 overall and 1-6 in the league.

SERIES HISTORY
UTA leads the all-time series 5-2, however, Georgia State has won two of the last three minutes including a 64-59 decision in UTA's last visit to the Panthers. A slow second quarter left UTA down after GSU outscored the Lady Mavs 20-8 in the stanza. 

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
UTA is looking to string its longest winning streak since opening the year with 5 in a row. The Lady Mavs are 13-3 when playing in the eastern time zone under coach Krista Gerlich. Georgia State has won 2 of the last 3 meetings, including last year’s at GSU Sports Arena. UTA has used 10 different starting lineups this season, but the last 2 of been the same with the inclusion of Alexander into the starting 5.


 

 

Rebekah VanDijk has averaged 23.3 points and 12.0 rebounds over the last 3 games. The senior needs 2 points to become the 5th player in UTA history with 1,500 points or more. VanDijk needs just 1 block to move into 12th in league history (179) and 5 to up to 11th. She is 51 rebounds away (1,027) to break UTA’s all-time record. Crystal Allen and Laurynn McGowen have averaged 10.7 pts in the last 3.

HEAD COACH Krista Gerlich
Krista Gerlich enters with with a 236-123 career record, while posting a 67-81 record in her fifth season at UTA. A 1993 graduate of Texas Tech, Gerlich has led a resurgance of the Lady Mavs, bringing the team from just a four-win season in her first year, to reaching the WNIT in 2017. As a player, Gerlich won the 1993 NCAA National Championship with Texas Tech. Prior to UTA, she was a standout coach at West Texas A&M, claiming three conference titles.

LAST TIME OUT
VanDijk paced the Lady Mavs with a game-high 29 points and 14 rebounds as she nabbed her 43rd-career double-double. Crystal Allen and Laurynn McGowen each got into double figures. 

ULM used a 10-0 run in the second quarter to overcome an early double-digit deficit to keep things close going into the break. However, UTA was able to build up its lead once again in the third, and carried that momentum through the final 10 minutes to take the week's final game.
