ARLINGTON, Texas -- The UT Arlington women's basketball program will conduct its third consecutive Maverick Spirit Kids Day game Thursday when the UTA Lady Mavericks take on Georgia Southern at the College Park Center.
The doors will open at 9:30 a.m. with the Sun Belt Conference contesting scheduled for an 11:30 a.m. Tickets are available online at UTATickets.com, in person at the UTA Box Office or by calling (817) 272-9595 during weekday business hours. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3 via WatchESPN.com or the WatchESPN app.
More than 5,500 kids, ranging from 3rd-7th grade, from school districts in the DFW area are expected to be in attendance. Most of the kids will be from the Arlington, Mansfield, Ft. Worth, Grand Prairie and Dallas school districts. The game provides the opportunity to show some young kids the possibilities available to attend college in the city they've grown up in - much like many UTA student-athletes.
A number of Maverick student athletes will be present to visit with the kids, as well as a nutritionist that will provide tips on living a healthy lifestyle. Members of the UTA police department will also provide kids with a variety of public safety tips.
Some schools will take part in self-guided and guided tours around campus and other activities throughout the day to view all that UTA has to offer - iIncluding trips to the planetarium and the Maverick Activities Center.
UTA Deputy Director of Athletics, Russell Warren noted, "this isn't just about a basketball game. It's about bringing excitement and teaching the kids about the University of Texas at Arlington."
With a large population of the students at UTA coming from the D-FW area, teaching them at a young age about the school that's in the backyard provides an early perspective into their future.
This popular event has grown in popularity each year. In 2016, approximately 2,500 students were in attendance, while in 2017 the number grew to almost 4,000. This year, a crowd exceeding 5,500 is expected to attend.
