ARLINGTON, Texas – UTA women's basketball is counting down the days until tipping off the season on Nov. 11 versus Incarnate Word on UTA Homecoming Week. With just 33 days until things start, we met today with Lady Maverick No. 33, redshirt freshman Kelsey Johnson.
What led you to wanting to join UTA, and how has it been since?
Johnson – "I chose to come here because I felt like it was a family atmosphere and I didn’t see that anywhere else. That was confirmed when I sat out my first year, because it would be easy to forget about me and they would always check up on me and they would encourage me.
How has your intensity been this season after sitting out with an injury last year?
Johnson - "It has really pushed me a lot. I look forward to practice a lot more and I think that last year opened my eyes. Not being able to play was really hard and seeing everyone else play made me want to play and love basketball even more. I really missed it. It was a lot of learning for me to get involved with practice."
Did sitting out last year help you going into practice this season to be prepared for what was to come?
Johnson – "It has helped me so much. Last year I remember in practices I was lost all the time and I think it was more because it was because I was nervous and this year I have come in more prepared and know what to expect. "
How did the Costa Rica experience help you get acclimated with this team?
Johnson – "It helped me so much. I had not played with these girls before so I really got to see how things worked. And for myself I got to get back into it and I had not played for over a year."
How is this team in terms of being friends and being a family?
Johnson – "It has been really great. I really love all of them, Brooke and Michaela are my two best friends. We do everything together. When we went to the Rangers game, everywhere we went we would turn the corner and people would make fun of both Brooke and I being in a boot. We really just go eat most of the time, we go to the mall and just hang out at our apartment."
What do you like to do outside of basketball when you get free time?
Johnson – "I love watching Netflix. I am obsessed with Greys Anatomy. I am watching 90210. I have so many shows that I watch. Greys has been my favorite and I really liked one tree hill and Friday Night Lights.
What are some of the things that you are working on to be ready for the season?
Johnson – "Physically I am working on just getting stronger. It is a lot more physical in college. That has been a big adjustment for me. I have been working on my 3-point shot and elbow jumpers."
What are you most looking forward to seeing form the team this year?
Johnson – "I am really excited I see so much potential in everyone. When we get the pieces put together and when we see them come together, we can really accomplish a lot.
