ARLINGTON, Texas - UTA women's basketball is counting down the days until tipping off the season on Nov. 11 versus Incarnate Word on UTA Homecoming Week. With just 22 days until the opener, meet the Lady Mav's No. 22, freshman Jennifer Parker.
What led you to choose UTA as your destination to play basketball at?
Parker - "I chose UTA because when coach Crawford did her home visit I felt the love and care and compassion even before they really knew me. When I did come to UTA for a visit I just really believed that they would treat me like family, and that was a big thing for me.
"In my visits I really liked that the campus is big, but it is also very well kept. I enjoyed that we were the fifth most diverse school in the country. I liked the fact that if I came here, since we were so diverse, that it wouldn’t be hard to fit in with the students on the campus and everyone comes together.
What are your thoughts about how close the season is to starting?
Parker- "I am really excited but I am nervous. I haven't got into games yet, but I have only gone against these girls and have gotten used to the, but it will be against people I have never played against before."
How big was the team's trip to Costa Rica in helping you prepare for the year and what was your favorite part about the adventure?
Parker- "It was really big. I'm happy that I got to get the chance to go to Costa Rica and play together before we played games that counted. It showed the team everything that we need to work on and the holes we needed to work on. My favorite part outside of basketball was the beach in Los Suenos, we could see the islands and it was just like a picture out of a magazine. That was definitely one of the best parts."
How has practice been this year compared to what it was like in high school?
Parker- "It is a lot different than high school. In high school, I was able to go easy and didn't really have to worry about anything. Here I have to work everyday, and come in everyday ready to go, you can't have a bad day here, any time you think you are having a bad day, you just have to keep your focus to improve."
Which of the upperclassmen have you looked up to the most?
Parker- "On the court I look towards Cierra, Crystal and Bek the most as they tell me just how it works. Rebekah and them can help me on the court and help me out to figure things out. Off the court, Zhane helps me a lot and she is my roommate. When we get free time we usually just go out to eat."
What are you looking forward to during your freshman season?
Parker- "Personally I just want to make my mark on the team. Through my freshman year I want to show my value towards the team and push myself to see how much I can improve over a year. I would like to be an important part of the team this year, and not just a role player. I want to make sure I work hard and I have a lot of expectations for when I am on the court for myself."
