WBB: 11 days, meet No. 11 Shelby Richards

Oct. 31, 2017

ARLINGTON, Texas - UTA women's basketball is counting down the days until tipping off the season on Nov. 11 versus Incarnate Word on UTA Homecoming Week. With just 11 days until the opener, meet the Lady Mav's No. 11, senior Shelby Richards.

How excited are you at the opportunity to play in your home state of Utah?
Richards- "When I first left home I never thought I'd have the opportunity to go home and play in front of my family. It is a really cool opportunity and it is really awesome to have a group of coaches that would make it possible for my senior year to go play at home.

"My family went to the Texas Tech game last year, my dad has come to a couple of games last year and my mom came down for the first game and they are coming for our first game this year. Every game that they can, but when we go out to Utah it will be all 12 of my siblings, cousins, is going to be awesome."

How big was the team's trip to Costa Rica to prepare for the upcoming year?
Richards- "On the basketball side it was crucial. it was a really good time to get out there and do what we worked on the first couple of months. It has really given us a jump start. My favorite part out of basketball was the times we got to be on the bus together, we got to have fun and dance to oldies and see everyone's personalities."

What have you been working on since the trip to prepare for the year?
Richards- "I have been working on my shot and my baseline rip to drive. I have just been trying to get healthy too."

How cool was it being featured on ESPN3 last year for your game-winning shot?
Richards-" It was really awesome. Looking back on it I am thankful for the opportunity and the coaching that I had to be prepared for when the time came."

How excited is the team for the upcoming year with the high expectations?
Richards- "We are all hungry. We all have the expectation, and every team goes in wanting it, but we are capable of getting there and it's keeping us accountable. I am really excited personally, but it's bitter sweet because it is my last one. I just have to go in hard and work hard every single day. "
