ARLINGTON, Texas - Despite the 2016-17 season tipping off on Saturday, it was an exciting day to build towards the future as UTA coach Krista Gerlich announced a stellar class of five signees on Thursday.
"We are extremely excited about our 2018 recruiting class," Gerlich said. "This is a large class that fills lots of needs for us and we feel we hit a home run. We signed each of the five positions on the floor and they are all great players, great students and great people. They definitely make our future look bright and we will continue to build on the successful foundation our current seniors have laid. What a great day in our Lady Mav program."
Plano HS | Plano, Texas | Forward
Notable: District champions in 2016-17, played with Texas Elite, Qwick and Top Achievers. Named varsity captain as a sophomore.
Coach Gerlich: "Emma has been committed to us since last March and focused on becoming a great piece to our puzzle in this class. She is extremely athletic to play the four position at 6-foot-3. She has guard skills which allows us to pull her to the perimeter and create mismatches. She is a great rebounder and can run the floor. I love her game and where she is capable of going."
Rio Rancho HS | Albuquerque, New Mexico | Guard
Notable: Averaged 13 points per game to go with three rebounds and assists per game. 2017 District Player of the Year, First Team All-District 1-6A. 2015-16 and 2016-17 Academic All-District. 2017 PBR All-America Games. Featured 23-point game during junior year. National Honor Society member.
Coach Gerlich: "She is slashing guard who can get to the rim and her mid-range jumper is college ready. She really likes to defend and do the things on defense most players avoid doing. She has tons of potential and it will be very exciting to watch her game grow over the next four years."
Comanche HS | Comanche, Okla. | Center
Notable: All Area Player of the year 2015, 16 and 17. All-Conference selection. All-Conference MVP in 2017. Stephens County Tournament MVP, Black Diamond Tournament MVP. OK Preps Player of the Year Nominee. Vype Oklahoma Southwest Player of the Year Nominee
Coach Gerlich: "She is a huge sign for us. Misty is a mobile 6-foot-5 player who can shoot the 3, run the floor, attack the basket, score on the block and defend the paint. We will be able to play her at multiple positions and she loves UTA! Her work ethic is exceptional and she has the potential to be one of the best to have come through our program."
Dale HS | Shawnee, Okla. | Guard
Notable: OBU All-Tournament team, Bertha Frank All-Tournament team. Little All-City first team. Back-to-back Bertha Teague Champions. Three State Tournament Appearances. 2017 State runner up
Coach Gerlich: "She is a great shooter, Claire is so smooth on her release and has deadly accuracy. She is a tall 3-guard who can slide over and play the four if we need her to. -Her athleticism and length are going to allow her to be very disruptive on the defensive side and her ceiling is extremely high. Claire is the sleeper in this class in my opinion as she will get better and better playing against stiff competition in practice every day."
Owasso HS | Owasso, Okla. | Point Guard
Notable: Tulsa Elite 8 nominee, state runner up during sophomore season. District and Area champs. First team Vype All-Oklahoma. OK Fans Chose player. Tulsa World Player of the Week selection during junior year. Featured a season high of 34 points, as well as a quadruple double in junior season.
Coach Gerlich: "She is an athletic point guard who can distribute the ball, score it and defend. I love her length on the perimeter and she is smart. She comes from a great line of genes with her brother Shake Milton at SMU. We are so fortunate to have a player of her caliber in our signing class."
