The 2017-18 season has been on the minds of the Lady Maverick coaching staff ever since their first signing class was announced. That class is now a loaded senior group that is joined by a deep roster that enters Saturday's season opener as the Sun Belt Conference favorites.

WBB: Mavs come up short, 52-48, to UIW
UT Arlington's bid for its first victory of the season came up short Thursday night, as Incarnate Word slipped past the Mavericks 52-48 before 633 fans at College Park Center.

Saturday's Homecoming tilt presented by Texas Trust features a women's and men's doubleheader at College Park Center. The Lady Mavs tipoff at 2:30 p.m. vs. Incarnate Word, while the men will follow the University's Homecoming Parade at 7 p.m. against Loyola Marymount. Both matchups are featured on ESPN3.

The excitement for UTA's Homecoming week has carried over to mix with the team's excitement to simply just hit the court for the opener.

"We are very excited to get start started and are ready to play someone else," UTA coach Krista Gerlich said. "We are ready for the lights to come on and all of our hard work to come full circle. The girls are really excited and we are excited to put our team in front of our fans and get this party started."

Since Day 1 that the team's summer camp opened in preparation for the Summer Tour to Costa Rica, the eyes have been on raising a banner in the rafters of College Park Center. Along with the overall team goal, several individual accolades are within reach. SBC Preseason Player of the Year Rebekah VanDijk is approaching becoming the first player in program history to record more than 1,000 points and rebounds in a career. Becoming the 18th player in UTA's 1,000-point club, VanDijk is also in reach of the program's all-time scoring mark.

Fellow senior Cierra Johnson, a selection to the league's preseason first team and defending SBC Defender of the Year, is on track to be the 19th player in the same 1,000-point club, as well as having her sights set on the program's, and league, all-time steals mark.

With all of the accolades within reach and expectations being so high, coach Gerlich has said that practice has still been focused on doing the little things, and meeting the small goals in order to achieve the main one at the end of the campaign.

"They have to focus on what we are trying to do," Gerlich said. "All of the expectations are great and we want to have those, but they know that they have to come to work every single day and do the little things and stick to what we have been working on and get better every single day."

Matchup Notes: The teams are meeting for just the third time, and first since coach Krista Gerlich's first season at UTA on Nov. 14, 2013. The series is tied 1-1, all meetings have taken place in Arlington.
