KYLE, Texas -- After starting the first round about an hour late due to this morning's cold temperatures, darkness fell before the 17-team field could complete the first day of competition at the Texas State Invitational Monday at Plum Creek Golf Club.
Second round play was suspended at 6:15 p.m. with the UT Arlington women's golf team sitting in a tie for 11th place, just one stroke off a tie for eighth. Most golfers have fewer than six holes remaining. The golfers are expected to resume play at 8 a.m. tomorrow to finish the second round, then will immediately begin the final round afterward.
Central Arkansas owns a 1-stroke lead at the top of the team leaderboard at 13-over par, one stroke ahead of runner-up Houston Baptist. Defending champion UTSA is nine strokes behind in third place.
UTA freshman Sydney Garber is the Mavericks' leading golfer. The Rockwall native finished the first round with a UTA career-low score of 4-over par 75. She concluded play this evening at 1-par. She is in a tie for 12th place in the 90-golfer field with three holes remaining.
Ava Schwienteck (Magnolia), the team's scoring leader during the fall season, carded a 5-over par 76 in the first round, is 4-over with six holes left to play and is looking to improve on her current tie for 32nd place standing.. McKinney native Madigan Murray is tied for 39th after posting a first round 80. She rebounded well with a pair of bogeys and a birdie to sit at 1-over par with six holes remaining.
Kate Tran (Arlington) is tied for 66th at 16-over par, while Allison Wade (Arlington) is tied for 87th at 23-over. Redshirt junior Rachel Phillips (Plano), playing as an individual, is also at 23-lover par heading into tomorrow.
