KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- With the second round at the Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Spring Classic completed Monday, the UT Arlington women's golf team improved its score by 9 strokes and moved up two places in the team standings.
The Mavericks shot a 16-over par 304 today and moved into sole possession of 32nd place at 41-over after 36 holes. UTA is two strokes ahead of Tennessee Tech and Longwood and four in front of South Dakota and IUPUI.
The 42-team event concludes tomorrow on two different golf courses. UTA golfers will play the 5,941-yard, par 72 Oak Point Golf Club, along with golfers from host College of Charleston "B", Tennessee Tech and Longwood.
Host College of Charleston continues to lead the team competition, pulling away to an 11-stroke lead over second place Murray State. The Cougars are the only team in the field with an under-par score, finishing the second round at 9-under. Jacksonville and Western Kentucky round out the top four teams.
Individually, Ava Schwienteck recovered her team-leading form by carding a 2-under par 70 in today's second round. After yesterday's 5-over 77, the Magnolia, Texas native played her first 11 holes at even par before a pair of birdies on hole nos. 1 and 2 put her at 2-under. She dropped a stroke with a bogey on the par 4 fifth hole, but recovered to birdie her final hole.
She enters tomorrow's final round in a tie for 38th place, one stroke ahead of 29th and two behind 22nd in the 218 golfer field.
Kate Tran (Arlington, Texas) also improved from her first round score to turn in a 2-over par 74 to finish at 8-over after 36 holes. She was even par through her first 12 holes before dropping two strokes coming down the stretch.
Sydney Garber (Rockwall, Texas) is tied for 144th at 13-over, while Allison Wade (Arlington) is at 16-over. Madigan Murray (McKinney, Texas) improved by nine strokes over yesterday's round and Rachel Phillips carded her second straight 83.
